Digital Innovation

Digital Innovation

It is time for an upgrade for health care. In today’s world hospitals and doctors must embrace new technology to advance with the times. Things like wearables, internet doctor visits, or virtual health care will start playing a central role in today’s electronic, online world. Modern day behemoth companies such as Google and Amazon are trying to enter into the health care field and hospitals and large health care companies must embrace this new technology based system to keep from being bought out or made obsolete. Patients are now expecting technological innovations and expect their lives to be made easier in traversing the complicated process of making doctors’ appointments or choosing a insurance policy. Health care workers have to try to see their professions from the eyes of a patient and need to try to challenge the way things ‘have always been done’ and come up with new solutions to patient problems. The University of Colorado Health has already begun introducing new technological innovations and their results are impressive. By introducing a new algorithm into their EMR that helps populate physician orders and consultation and help schedule future exams, the hospitals found that guidelines compliance increased from less than 50% to more than 90%. The facility also introduced a new clinical decision support system around the use of pharmaceuticals and this helped increase the rate of patient compliance from around 30% to 80%. A new process of patients using wearables for three days before their doctors’ appointments has helped their M.D.’s have a far more comprehensive view of their patient’s health and habits than a static exam.  All of these digital innovations is the kind of advancement the health care industry needs to survive in a world where technology is king.

Graham-Cassidy-Heller-Johnson Health Care Bill

Tuesday, October 10, 2017 7:20:45 AM America/Los_Angeles

The Graham-Cassidy health care bill will have a significant impact on the future of medical device sales, but it is unsure of what this impact might be.  The large medical device companies are unsure if they want to support this bill because while the bill would end the medical device tax, it also will have an unknown impact on the health care system as a whole. There is two schools of thought on the bill. Bruce Carlson, the publisher of Kalorama Information, told HCB News. “On one hand, they want the medical device excise tax eliminated. On the other, I think they’re also concerned about radical changes. For instance, if there is, as America’s Health Insurance Plans is saying, the potential destabilization of the insurance system, that’s going to concern a lot of device companies and the members of a lot of advocacy groups of device companies. They’re also concerned about how many people have health insurance and are funding the health care system.” Many insurance companies have taken a stance against the bill saying that it will lead to millions of Americans losing their health care coverage due to rising costs. The medical device companies are in favor of repealing the medical device tax claiming that this new tax will cost people their jobs, especially in small companies; however this would be a double edges sword. The repeal of this tax with the passing of the Graham-Cassidy health care bill would also lead to reduced sales in medical devices since the price of insurance plans would increase and cause patient numbers in hospitals to decrease and this would lead to less profits for the hospitals to use for such things as medical devices. The senate is currently in process of debating this proposed legislation.

Refurbishing Medical Equipment

Refurbishing Medical Equipment

Medical equipment can often be seen classified as ‘refurbished’ on medical company websites, however most of these sites do not specify what they define as ‘refurbished’. What exactly does that mean and what is the process of refurbishment? There are things to watch out for when searching for used medical equipment and hopefully this helps explain what we do at Willow Medical a little better.

The term refurbishment should not be confused with other similar terms such as ‘used’, ‘pre-owned’, or ‘reconditioned’. While these terms are very similar they do mean different things. The term ‘used’ applies to pumps that have been used before and are generally sold in ‘as-is’ condition. These pumps may be anywhere from good to poor condition depending on how well the previous owner kept the pumps. The term ‘pre-owned’ mean that the pump was purchased new from someone else, but it does not indicate the condition the pump is in currently. The term ‘reconditioned’ may mean the same as refurbished, and it indicates that the pump has been repaired in some way.

Now for refurbished pumps, there are also three different levels of refurbishment. First there is ‘visual refurbishment’ which means that the unit has been tested to ensure proper working function, but is not in excellent cosmetic shape. This unit would need cosmetic repairs but would otherwise be in good working order. Next, there is ‘parts replacement’ condition. This means that the unit requires parts to be replaced for it to be in good working order. These parts must come from other refurbished units or new from the manufacturer. Last, there is ‘full refurbishment’. This means the unit has been restored to its original and like-new condition. This type of refurbishment requires units to receive both cosmetic repairs and parts replacement.

Refurbished equipment is generally much cheaper than buying pumps ‘new’ and this has given rise to an increased demand for refurbished units in recent years. Many medical supply companies have now started dealing in refurbished units as a result of this increase in demand, but are still in process of perfecting their refurbishing techniques. We here at Willow Medical only sell Refurbished iv infusion pumps and beds and ‘new’ medical monitors. We have been dealing in equipment for years, so you can count on our equipment being in the best condition and at the best price.

Baxter Sigma Spectrum Infusion System Pump

Wednesday, September 27, 2017 6:23:13 AM America/Los_Angeles

The Baxter Sigma Spectrum is one of the leading IV pumps in terms of safety, technology, efficiency and analytics on the market today.

A major leading cause of deaths in the US is preventable medical errors. The Sigma Spectrum has come up with a way to minimize patient risk and make the use of an IV pump easier on medical professionals. The drug library built into the pump automatically reads the medications and their dosing to identify any potentially harmful doses or rate changes to the patient. Not only does the Sigma Spectrum identify potential dosing errors, it also increases hospital and staff drug compliance to almost 97%. The Sigma automatically defaults to the drug library when the pump is turned on, making using it a breeze and to make things even easier, the pumps library can be updated wirelessly with little to no staff interaction needed.

The advanced technology built into the Sigma Spectrum allows for nurses and clinical staff to spend more time focusing on the patient rather than the equipment in the room. The Sigma Spectrum can directly integrate with your EMR allowing the pumps data to be uploaded to the patients chart saving nursing staff even more time. The Sigma Spectrum IV Pump also includes tracking on each unit, allowing clinical staff to save time looking for available equipment. This tracking capability tells clinical staff if the pump is in use and where it is on the floor so staff knows where to get equipment at all times. The tracking combined with the fact that the Sigma Spectrum is a lightweight and small unit, makes it very easy to move between rooms and not be a pain for patients to walk around with.

The Sigma Spectrum can also be combined with the cutting edge Baxter software ‘DoseEdge’ or ‘Infusion Analytics’ where drug and physician orders can be uploaded directly onto the pump and EMR. The Sigma Spectrum sends daily reports to your computers so you can optimize your drug libraries and reduce dose errors as much as possible. Using these reports, you can increase infusion pump related patient safety, optimize drug libraries, eliminate unnecessary alarms, minimize adverse drug reactions and dose rates, and save your employees time on charting and searching for open equipment.

The Sigma Spectrum is the start of a bright new future for infusion pump safety and simplicity. Its lightweight small size, easy to use operating system, wireless updates, transferable information to EMR’s, automatic safety alarms for dosing and medications, tracking capability and easy to use computer software make the Sigma Spectrum a necessary addition to your clinic or hospital.
